Be There!

HE'S BACK!!!!!! The man, the legend, Bugz In the Attic main man, Daz-I-Kue returns to Sonotheque exactly one year after he leveled the club, to do the same. Last years set was too hot and is still of legend. This time hot of his tour and release of the Bugz 'Back In The Dog House' which was heralded by Mojo, Straight No Chaser, Gilles Peterson as hot biznasty. This is not to be missed, strictly pressure for those in the know and school for those who need to. Let the pressure drop!!!!

Bugz in the Attic refers to a whole group of producers/musicians/DJs with individual talents and influences, made of by artists such as Orin 'Afronaught' Walters, Kaidi Tatham, Seiji and others. Together, then maintain a common goal to create and promote quality dance music. Known widely for their remix work Bugz maintain a very individual approach to their operation, and it is this that has helped push their sound forward and prevent them getting stuck in any musical rut or fashion. Many of the crew have carved reputations in their own right and on their own terms and together they’ve upheld a reputation across Europe and the World which their sheer number and vision has helped to maintain.

Daz-I-Kue emerged through no one music scene, he hails from the full spectrum of black music from Reggae to House to Hip Hop to R'n'B and so on. Coming through the sound system scene, Daz has been Djing since '83, his system at Notting Hill Carnival has been running every year since '92 and it now hosts the Co-Op system at Carnival on the same stage.

Before Bugz Daz-I-Kue made his bread and butter as an engineer for acts like Soul II Soul, IG Culture, Dodge, Junior Giscombe, Phil Asher and was in-house engineer at seminal UK House label Slip n' Slide for a couple of years while producing with Danny J. Lewis as Da Funkstarz, Groove Chronicles, Urban Street Soul Orchestra, Masters At Work, Kenny Carpenter, the list goes on and on.

Joining Daz on the decks is Deeper Soul Recordings owner and founder Josh Deep. Josh's sets are characteristic of his wide personal tastes and the profile of the label. Centered around a house groove, you can expect anything from deep house, broken beat, to deep spiritual jazz, African rich grooves, deep disco, and music from the labels current and future releases.

Deeper Soul instantly gained the recognition in the industry from a who's who of DJ's and international press. Deeper Soul has set itself apart with historic projects including the remix series of AACM member Kahil El'Zabar's music, a live project featuring IG Culture, Henrik Schwarz, label head Josh Deep backed by the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, and the forthcoming first full length by IG Culture under the Quango guise. Having worked with Osunlade, Charles Webster, Kemetic Just, IG Culture, Alton Miller, and Kemit Sources to name a few, Deeper Soul is taking things seriously. More than just a dance label, Deeper Soul is set to create a new page in Chicago’s rich music history.

SONOTHEQUE & DEEPER SOUL RECORDINGS PRESENT...
DJ ALTON MILLER

SONOTHEQUE
1444 W. CHICAGO AVE.
312.226.7600
DOORS OPEN @ 8 PM

Sonotheque together with locally-based Deeper Soul Recordings presents DJ Alton Miller, one of Detroit’s central figures in the present resurgence of electronic dance music. Growing up in the constantly creative musical environment of the Motor City like other Detroit-based luminaries such as Ayro , Amp Fiddler & John Beltran, Miller soaked up the soulful sounds of classic Motown, Philadelphia and the many permutations of P-Funk. Equally influenced by the Chicago house scene spearheaded by artists like Ron Hardy and Frankie Knuckles; Alton Miller by the late 80’s began “The Music Institute” a short-lived but by now legendary club that has since reached near-mythical status.

Joining forces with DJ Derrick May, first as an employee of May’s Transmat Record label, then as Aphrodisiac, the name under which he began releasing his own music; Miller also appeared on the KMS label and a series of EPs on the Fragile label. His increased presence in the Detroit area through a series of live performances brought further recognition to his personal sound with future collaborations with Carl Craig’s Planet , Mike Grant’s Moods & Grooves and Distance.

Having toured extensively through France, Chile, England, Switzerland, Portugal and Germany; Miller has brought an expanded vision to the sometimes maligned status of House music with his intimate connection to drumming and the varied cadences of African-based rhythms.

The evening features the release of Miller’s latest release on the locally-based Chicago label Deeper Soul track “Choose To Believe”. Sung by Sky, another Detroit native, the spoken word melody reminiscent of a whiskey soaked jazz singer from the early 50’s instantly comes to mind. With an equally impressive remix by Sweet Abraham featuring a deep crunching bass “Choose To Believe” will soon be featured on the more left-field dance floors around the globe.

Joining Alton Miller is Sonotheque resident groove merchant Joe Bryl and Deeper Soul label founder Josh Deep. Doors open at 8pm for the event. Questions about the event can be forwarded to

Sonotheque and Straight No Chaser Magazine are proud to present “Endless Flight” an ongoing series of engagements showcasing seminal talent from both Chicago and around the globe. Hosted by DJ Anthony Nicholson (Miquifaye Music) and DJ/writer Karl Injex (Tauriva) “Endless Flight” combines the talent of cutting-edge djs/producers with live performances from the outer realms of the jazz world.

On Thursday November 20 in a celebration and introduction to the new Chicago based label, Deeper Soul Recordings, and the labels relationship with Kahil El’Zabar, “Endless Flight” will feature a live performance by master percussionist Kahil El’Zabar’s Ritual Trio with members Malachi Favors (Art Ensemble of Chicago) on bass and Ari Brown (AACM) on reeds and piano. Deeper Soul Recording’s mission is to showcase musicians who are forward thinking artists while retaining the universal aspect of music that resonates within the soul. Whether through African influences, jazz, soul, funk, hip-hop, or house, it is always soulful. Kahil’s Ethnic Heritage Ensemble will be releasing three 12” singles on Deeper Soul with remixes by underground dance artists Kemit Sources, Osunlade, plus other cutting edge artists. The 12” singles will be compiled for a CD release early 2004.

Kahil’s diversity and heritage as a musician reads as long one can imagine. With the Ritual Trio, Kahil takes a progressive approach to their avant-garde jazz form, moving between controlled outbursts of free jazz intensity to sweet melodic solos by Ari and Malachi. This trio has been shaping the future of jazz for over 20 years. The members draw on each of their histories and individual voices to create a sound that is simultaneously rooted in the past and looking forward at the same time. The bands most recent release on Delmark Records, “African ‘N’ Da Blues”, showcases the bands virtuosity paired with the intensity of the legendary Pharoah Sanders.

Always a leading figure in the Chicago avant-garde jazz scene, a versatile percussionist, and master of African sounds and music, Kahil has hand built his own collection of congas, kalimbas (hand pianos) and other African percussion instruments. Recently celebrating his 50th birthday, Kahil has been a member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) since he was 18. Ritual Trio member Malachi Favors has been a member of the Art Ensemble of Chicago for over 3 decades. Kahil’s diversity as a musician and desire to remain open and progressive to new forms and possibilities are the fundamental aspects that have driven the combining of forces between Kahil and Deeper Soul Recordings.

Hosts/DJs Anthony Nicholson and Karl Injex continually collaborate to expand on the ever-evolving nature of jazz. With their historical acumen of music that is rooted in the past yet ever evolving into the future, their sets bridge the more limited interpretations of what jazz is by incorporating African, Latin, Brazilian influences with an understanding of music that is rooted in a soulful sensibility. Josh Deep of Deeper Soul Recordings will also present upcoming music for the label in a pre-performance set.

Doors open for ‘Endless Flight” at 9pm. For any further information please contact Joe Bryl at 312-226-7600 or info@sonotheque.net or joshdeep@deepersoulrecs.com.
